In 1741 Alexandre de Vendeuvre, descendant of one of the oldest Norman families, related to the Counts of Flanders, began to build a typical countryside home. For his summer residence he called on the services of the well-known architect Jacques-François Blondel.
The restraint of the overall style is relieved by the balance and harmony of the mouldings and sculptures. Blondel paid particular attention to the highly sophisticated interior circulation and decoration. Classed as a Historic Monument both for its exterior and interior, Vendeuvre is the prototype of an aristocratic norman countryside residence of the 18th century.
